Databases take time to retrieve data, people take time to process data. Knowing this, we created a query restriction in HP OpenView Service Desk. The query restriction is a limit to the number of items retrieved from the database. Since fewer items are retrieved, it takes less time to show them. For example, say there are a thousand customers that make use of the help desk. Although Service Desk is fast, it still takes some time to show all customers. It is unlikely that you will find the name of a caller from a list of a thousand persons very easily. To help you, the system administrator can limit the number of persons shown to a reasonable size, say two hundred. Two hundred persons are shown in a reasonable time. However, in this example only 20 percent of people is shown in the list and it is likely that the person you want to find is not in the list.
If a query restriction applies, Service Desk shows the following message when you open a view, or after you click Find Now in the Advanced Find dialog box.
Click OK to proceed. The status bar of the view or the Advanced Find dialog box will now look as follows.
In the above image, 430 items are shown in the view and the query restriction is set to 430 items.
When the item you want is not in the list and a query restriction applies:
Use the lookup item field
before opening Quick Find.
Use or change the filter of the view
to make the view more specific.
Use more criteria in Advanced Find
to reduce the number of items in the result.
NOTE: When you open the Quick Find dialog box,
another message is shown if the query restriction applies. For
details, see Using lookup item
buttons.
